UNESCO declares P/Harcourt World Book Capital 2014

THE United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has declared the Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as the World Book Capital, 2014.

The development, which took place on Tuesday, was in recognition of a bid for staging of the book event by the Rainbow Book Club, a Port Harcourt-based non-governmental organisation.

The Rainbow Book Club had, in June 2012, entered a bid to stage the bi-annual World Book Festival in Port Harcourt.

The bid, according to organisers, was supported by the Bring Back the Book project, an initiative of President Goodluck Jonathan, which was inaugurated in December 2010.

A statement confirming the acceptance of Port Harcourt said the Nigerian bid was also supported by the Rivers State government and other well-meaning book enthusiasts in the country.
