Reps direct Mainstream Bank to reinstate sacked staff

Share

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, directed the management of Mainstreet Bank, formerly Afribank, to reinstate 41 union members that were sacked by the bank on March 31, 2002.

The House Committee on Legislative Compliance chaired by Honourable Moruf Akinderu-Fatai gave the directive during a meeting with the management of the bank at the National Assembly.

The House had in March 21, 2002, deliberated on the report of its Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity on the wrongful disengagement of the labour union officials and mandated the management of Afribank  to reinstate the disengaged staff and pay them their salaries from the date of disengagement and deduct whatever benefit that had already paid to the union officials from their emoluments.

In line with this, during Monday's meeting with the bank’s executives led by its Regional Manager in charge of Abuja, Mr Dauda Momoh, the committee directed the bank to obey the House resolution.

Responding, Mr Momoh, who represented the Managing Director of the bank, said the bank's new management "cannot absorb the staff."
