Barely two days to the Saturday governorship election in Bayelsa State, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, on Wednesday, in Yenagoa, assured that the electoral body would ensure the conduct of a free, fair and acceptable poll.

He maintained that the necessary logistics, materials and other facilities needed for the crucial poll were ready, saying that INEC would not rest on its oars to ensure credibility of the process and high standard.

Jega, who made this known during a stakeholders’ meeting held on the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State council stated that, “we are working in partnership with security agencies on the safe and quick conveyance of electoral materials to all polling units in the state.”

According to him, “INEC has bought boats, which would be used to transport electoral materials and officials to riverine communities and the Nigerian Navy (NN), Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the JTF are ready to provide logistics assistance to us, in order to make the conduct of the poll efficient and result-oriented.”

While commenting on the prosecution of potential electoral offenders, Professor Jega said INEC would not hesitate to constitutionally deal with anybody that engages in electoral malpractices, disclosing that, “after the conduct of April general election, we have successfully prosecuted more than 200 offenders and on voters’ registration alone, we have over 870,000 offenders.”
