The Federal Government has declared its preparedness to be involved in the digitalisation process of the broadcast media in the country.

The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, while speaking at the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC)/Yemi Sonde Broadcast Media Stakeholders’ Forum in Ibadan on Thursday, disclosed that the process would be gradual with effect from June 7, 2012.

Speaking on the theme, “Towards quality broadcasting in digital era,” Maku said that the process would be concluded in 2015 during which all Nigerians would have access to digital broadcasting system right in their homes.

According to him, Nigeria has no choice but to be involved in digital broadcast media.

Represented by the Director-General, NBC, Mr Yomi Bolarinwa, the minister explained that the process would involve changing from analogue to digital equipment, adding that only the transmission had not been digitalised in the broadcast media.

He said that digitalisation would bring about quality contents on information, education and developmental issues.

He declared that Nigeria was prepared for the digitalisation, saying that it would enable Nigerians to sit at their homes and watch programmes from their television sets with ease.

He said that a white paper would soon be issued on the digitalisation of the broadcast media.

The chairman on the occasion, Dr Obiora Chukwuka, said that for Nigeria to achieve the set targets of Vision 20:2020, it must endeavour to revolutionise the broadcast media sector.
