VICE chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Senator Joseph Waku, has raised the alarm that some forces within the polity are trying to derail the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), by sponsoring a campaign against its current leadership, led by Mrs Farida Waziri.

The senator, in a press conference in Abuja, on Sunday, said he had observed some calculated plots against the EFCC in recent times by some persons who, he said, were either being prosecuted or investigated by the anti-graft body.

According to Waku, the group involved in the campaign against the EFCC had been orchestrating attacks, media reports and outright false insinuations against Mrs Waziri.

“From my  findings, I have noticed that some people who are being prosecuted, investigated or want the EFCC team to get off their trail are trying to take the advantage of the situation in the country, especially with the coming of Dr Goodluck Jonathan as acting president, so as to distract Farida by sponsoring reports of her likely removal,” Waku said.

He added that he was, however, pleased to read a denial by the presidency to a report that the government was planning to remove the chairman of the anti-graft body.

The former lawmaker said he was delighted to read an interview by the spokesman of EFCC, who catalogued some achievements of the new leadership of the commission.

He said the  EFCC had, during the 18 months of Farida’s leadership, instituted 50 cases against corrupt persons and recovered funds and assets in excess of $3 billion.
