FOLLOWING the petition by the governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji, alleging threats to his life by his predecessor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, the State Security Services (SSS), at the weekend, interrogated Kalu, with a view to establishing the substance of the allegations.

Kalu, who spent over one and a half hours with top security operatives of the agency, had received a summon at his Abuja residence late Friday evening, to come to the headquarters of the agency today, but he opted to answer the invitation on Saturday, because, according to sources close to him, he had clean conscience as far as the allegations were concerned.

Kalu, who was interrogated by a three-man team, was asked if he had anything to do with alleged threats to the life of Governor Orji and his son, Chinedu and his role in Orji’s administration since 2007.

The former governor said he had no reason to threaten Governor Orji or his son, adding that “I couldn’t have been stupid to threaten a governor to his face, or indirectly if, indeed, I harboured such thoughts.”

Describing himself as a law-abiding citizen who abhorred violence, he said he had no personal feud with his successor, adding that whatever squabble the governor had was with his former party, the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), over his failure to deliver democracy dividends to Abia people.

Kalu, according to the source, returned to his residence after the interrogation, but refused to give detailed comments, but said he hoped the truth would, one day, be revealed.

The former governor also debunked allegations that his administration plunged the state into a N29 billion debt while he was governor.

In a two-page letter addressed to Abia people, which was personally signed by him, Kalu said he left no such debt, and, therefore, challenged the financial institutions, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), state government and the media to publish their findings.

“If the governor is sure of his facts, he should not hesitate to make them public, otherwise, he should stop disparaging my person,”
