The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, as part of his administration’s effort to improve the welfare of the  workers in the state, has approved the payment of 15 per cent increase  in basic salary as furniture allowance to public servants and also reviewed allowances of judicial service workers.

The governor disclosed this while marking his 1,000th day in office at the Lagos Television, Ikeja, Lagos on Monday.

The governor at the ocassion, expressed joy over the rating of Lagos by the Economic Intelligence Unit, a research arm of UK-based news magazine as the fifth worst city to live in the world

He said that the rating had put Lagos among the best 140 cities in the world.He said that the processes of implementation of the increment were underway, saying that staff would receive the payments shortly.

Fashola described the report as a plus for his administration.

According to the report tagged “Global Live-ability Report” for 2010, Lagos was rated as the fifth worst city to live in, describing the city as one of the worst cities where most aspects of living were severely restricted.

Commenting on the report, Fashola said that Lagos was the only state in Nigeria and one of the best African cities that appeared in the rating, saying that the report would trigger the government to do more instead of slowing it down.

He said, “I check the agency’s report for 2007, 2008 and 2009 to know the position of Lagos and I want to say that it is a plus that Lagos is among the 140 cities rated in the world. While city like Accra was not there, we have 10 of American cities and perhaps five Canadian cities in the ratings.”

The governor explained that the economy of the state had improved in the last 10 years since democracy took over, adding that the Internally Generated Revenue had increased from N600 million monthly  to about N17 billion at present.

According to him, the journey of transforming Lagos began when the streets were taken over by refuse, dead bodies and when morale was at its lowest in the public service, adding, “At those period,  the state was not rated until we choose democracy and elected my predecessor Bola Tinubu and consequently myself to reclaim the state.”
