THE people of the South South under the aegis of South South Peoples Assembly (SSPA), on Monday, warned against military incursion into the nation’s polity, in the wake of the power vacuum created by prolonged absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua.

SSPA gave this warning in a communiqué issued in Abuja at the end of its meeting, which deliberated on the prevailing political and constitutional crisis, arising from the long absence of President Yar’Adua, who has been away 78 days in Saudi Arabia for medical treatment.

The communiqué signed by the Chairman of DAAR Communications, owners of the Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Ray Power FM, Chief Raymond Dokpesi  and 18 others including Ambassador Obi Odu, Senator M.T. Mbu (Jr), said any attempt to drag the military into power would lead to disintegration of the country.

It said: “The SSPA vehemently condemns the overtures being made by certain elements for military intervention in our fledging democratic dispensation as this is most likely to provoke dire consequences and possible disintegration of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

The group has accordingly urged the National Assembly to within three days confirm Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan as the acting president.

“The National Assembly should, in the supreme interest of national stability, pass without further equivocation, not later than Thursday, 11 February 2010, a resolution to confrrm Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as acting president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the communiqué said.

Meanwhile, theYoruba Council of Elders (YCE), has appealed to the National Assembly to save the country  from collapsing, by ensuring that Vice president  Goodluck Jonathan was empowered to start acting as the president, pending the time the health condition of President Umaru Yar’Adua improved .

Reading a communiqué  of the organisation  jointly signed by the YCE president,  General Adeyinka Adebayo (rtd) and the organisations  Publicity Secretary, Mr. Oluyemi Falade , the group noted that a situation where the entire country was held to ransom because the president took ill , was unacceptable.

The organisation whose communiqué was read by Falade, also  blamed those who were shielding the ailing president from handing over power to his deputy, adding that they  were only toying with the destiny of the nation and its entire citizenry.

“These political jobbers who are shielding the ailing president from doing the right thing have failed to realize that , they are playing with the life of 140 milion people,” the YCE said.
