Three people working at the illegal toxic waste dump in Ile-Igbon in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State, have been reported dead, while 10 others are hospitalised for various diseases as a result of the radio active substance they inhaled at the site.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the ‘owner’ of the illegal dump site had been arrested and detained at the Iyaganku Central Police statiom in Ibadan.

The commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Alhaji Majekodunmi Aborode, had led experts and journalists to the illegal dump site during which he threatened to arrest and prosecute anybody found working at the site.

According to him, the radioactive substance, being exhumed from the site could lead to cancer and disease of the lung.

Meanwhile, arrangements have been concluded by the state government to organise the first Oyo State Environment Summit tagged “Oyosters 2010” with a view to giving environment issues a priority.
