FG orders UNN to reopen

Students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), may soon smile as the Federal Government has ordered the governing council of the university to reopen it without further delay.

The university was shut since January 16,  following violent demonstration over hike in school fees  which led to massive destruction of school property by students.

Sources told the Nigerian Tribune in Enugu on Monday that the directive was given  to the embattled  Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Bartholomew Okolo and the chairman of its governing council, Professor S. Igwe, when they were summoned before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) last week.

It was learnt that tension continued to mount on both the Nsukka and Enugu campuses of the university, where series of meetings and consultations with stakeholders held throughout the weekend.

Further checks showed that there were plans by the university authorities to dissolve all students union bodies of the institution while also using the panel set up by the governing council to force the students to pay heavy reparation fee for the damage done to the property of the university during the protest.
