THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated the governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), on his victory at the governorship election held in the state, on Saturday.

The party called on him to immediately begin the process of genuine reconciliation among the people of the state.

In a statement issued in Abuja, on Monday, which was signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali, the party also commended its candidate in the election, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, as well as other candidates for running an issue-based campaign and displaying good sportsmanship after the election.

According to the statement, “the PDP is joining all Nigerians to offer congratulations to Mr Obi on his victory and urge him to immediately commence the process of genuine reconciliation by providing a platform where all citizens of Anambra would feel a sense of belonging.”

Also, the Senate President, David Mark and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, have congratulated the Mr Obi on his victory at the polls.

Senator Mark, in a statement made available to the National Assembly correspondents, which was signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Paul Mumeh, urged Obi to carry all stakeholders, irrespective of party affiliation and the people of the state on board, saying that unity of purpose was needed to move the state forward.

He noted with delight that Obi emerged through an electoral process adjudged as free and fair and implored him to extend his hands of fellowship to other contestants in the task of developing the state.

Senator Ekweremadu, in his congratulatory message, described Obi’s victory as historic.

In a letter to the governor, Senator Ekweremadu said “since power is a gift from God, it should translate that those who climb the rung of power should count themselves lucky to have been chosen by God for a purpose.”

In the same vein, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, on Monday, congratulated Obi on his re-election and success at the just-concluded governorship poll in Anambra State

Raising the election issue under Matter of Urgent Public Importance, the House Majority Leader, Honourable Kolawole  Taiwo, said members of the House were happy over Obi’s success, even though their candidate, Dr Chris Ngige, did not win.

Meanwhile, a former governor of the old Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has derided the PDP, saying that the party should thank God that Nigerians have decided to excuse it from governance.

While speaking with reporters in Abuja, on Monday, Ezeife said he hoped the PDP would not protest that the party was not able to rig the election.
