The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State, on Wednesday, rejected a consignment of rice allocated to it by Mohammed Abacha’s Campaign Organisation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Abacha was believed  to be one of the four aspirants for the governorship of Kano State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

NAN  reported that the Correspondents Chapel  returned the five bags given to it by Alhaji Ibrahim Ado Gwag-warwa, director of publicity of the organisation and thanked him for the gesture.

The decision of the chapel came after its meeting during which members unanimously agreed to return the gift to the Abacha group.

In his response, Gwagwarwa, a former director of press to former governor of Kano State, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, expressed dismay at the action of the journalists, saying that it showed their “lack of appreciation” of the gesture.

He said the gift was of his own volition, as the chapel was not one of those listed as beneficiaries.

NAN further  reported that each of the 50-kilogramme bags of the rice carried the PDP logo, bearning “Compliments of Alhaji Mohammed Abacha.”
