The National Vice President Association of Traditional Orthopaedic Practitionals of Nigeria (ASTROPON), Dr. Dada Arogun-Ariyo has urged the presidency and the National Assembly to facilitate the passage of the bill on traditional medicine, in order to integrate traditional medicine into the National Health Care System.

Dr. Arogun-Ariyo, regretted that quacks and charlatans in their midst are always proving stubborn and giving the association bad name because of government’s apathy towards their practice.

According to him,  if the bill is passed, it will ensure the establishment of the Traditional Medicine Council and formal recognition and power to discipline bad eggs.

According to the trado-medical practitioner, traditional medicine has been since the inception orthodox medicine, and it has sustained mankind over time, hence, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said 60 to 65 per cent of Nigerians use traditional medicine for their medical problems.

Dr. Arogin-Ariyo added, in my area of specialisation most amputations were unnecessary and the orthodox hospitals, if only they could collaborate, encourage and put-into-test the trado-medicine practitioners who have been certified and ready to prove their expertise.

“Sincerely, government’s delay is dangerous and unhelpful. Till date, traditional medicine has gone international, and fetching good foreign exchange in countries likeChina, India, Japan, Germany and Brazil. There products abound in Nigeria,” Dr. Arogun-Ariyo stressed.

The tradition orthopaedic practitioner called for governmnent’s support in standardisation and utilisation of traditional medicine as well as  effective research and development to enrich traditional medicine.
