RECENTLY, Governor Rauf Aregbesola at a public function in Osogbo said that Osun State University is not a private school.

He also condemned the action of the immediate past governor of the state, for increasing the fees the university is charging.

   He then ordered that the school fees should be reduced by 50 per cent. But to our greatest surprise, the fees is still as it was last year. For example, students in Arts Faculty are still paying between N160,000 and N180,000.

Also, his counterpart in Oyo State, said that all school fees in all higher institutions of learning, should be reduced by 50 per cent, but degree students at the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education’s (affiliated with Ekiti State University) students’ fees are still as they were in the last academic year. Presently, part three students are to pay N70,000.

It should be noted here that the Ekiti State government had effected a reduction in fees in all her higher institutions in the state.

There is need for both Oyo and Osun state governments to clear the air on this issue. I need these two governors to understand that it is a sin to make a promise and not fulfil such. They need to behave like our great Papa Obafemi Awolowo, who never uttered a word that could not come to pass.

If the reduction is for real, those concerned should be directed to effect the changes without further delay.
