In every fatality, there are one thousand cases of near misses which indicate that those fatal cases could be avoided if proper care and more attention are given to environmental sustainability and management.

These were the words of Mr Emmanuel Sorunke, the Health Safety and Environment manager (HSE) of Procter and Gamble industries (P&G) at the inauguration of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Faculty of Public Health, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

Speaking at the event, the coordinator of the department, Dr Godson Ana, said the programme was a means of sensitizing the immediate community and creating sufficient awareness both locally and internationally about the discipline in Nigeria.

He explained that the programme would help correct some misconceptions, rediscover prowess, unlock potentials and stimulate the department in order tomake it more focused and stay competitively relevant among the plethora of disciplines and professions that had added value to the society. He also used the forum to solicit for support for the smooth take off and the growth and sustainability of the department.

Also speaking, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Adewole, stated that Ibadan is a very dirty city and the department could help alleviate this challenge by partnering with the state government to clean up the city in a sustainable way.

In her contribution, the Director General of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Dr Mrs NgeriBenebo, said the establishment of the department would key into the Federal Government transformation agenda to ensure the delivery of the MDG and vision 20:2020.
