‘LUTH has delivered on its mandate at 50’

The Chief Medical Director of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital(LUTH), Professor Akin Osibogun has declared that the hospital had been able to deliver on its mandate of providing specialised services, training of manpower in the health sector and conducting research in the last 50 years of its establishment.
Osibogun, who disclosed this at a press conference to herald the 50th anniversary celebration of the hospital in Lagos, said the hospital has grown from a 300- bed when it was established in 1962 to 800-bed.
“We have grown from a position of no obstetric services to where we now provide services in all sub-specialties of medicine. The hospital now offer services which Nigerians have been travelling abroad to get such as renal transplantation.
We have re-commenced endoscopic service and total hip and knee replacements”, he added
He said the hospital had remained a foremost training centre in the country, saying it was critical to the human capital development in the health sector.
“We have contributed over 3000 nurses to the health sector in Nigeria with some of them practicing in America and Europe. Our school of nursing is also 50 this year. We have also been producing doctors since 1962”, he said
On some of the landmark achievements of the hospital, Osibogun said: “We carried out a successful renal transplantation in July last year. Also last year, the hospital delivered its first set of quintuplets(five babies) and all the babies survived and are doing well”
As part of the 50th anniversary celebration, he said the hospital would be offering free services in August to 50 patients ( or 50 per cent reduction in the cost of complicated cases) in cleft and palate surgery, cataract surgery, cancer screening, pap smear and mammography.
On the other activities lined up for the celebration which is expected to climax in November, Osibogun said there would be novelty match, walk for life, anniversary lecture and staff day, adding that the ceremonies would also provide opportunity for public-spirited individuals and socially responsible corporate organisations to help the hospital in providing services that would bring down the rate of medical tourism in the country.
