The resolve by the Kwara state government to honour the former governor of the state, late Alhaji Mohammed Lawal, by naming the Golf Club in Ilorin after him has earned commendations from associates, supporters and leaders of thought in the state.

Since the state government took the decision, various political associations in the state have been writing the government to express support and solidarity for it on the initiative, which they described as bold and being in the right direction.

The letters were written by different groups on the aegis of Lawal Followers Association, The Lawal Leadership Forum in Ilorin Emirate and youths/women Wing of Lawal political associates and made available to newsmen, noted in unison that the plan by the government was capable of overcoming politics of bitterness in Kwara.

In its letter of appreciation signed by Alhaji Rasaq Lawal, former Commissioner of Special Duties, members noted that that the renaming of Ilorin Golf Club as Mohammed Lawal Golf Club was in recognition of his contributions towards the development of the state, particularly in the area of sports.

The group assured the governor of their unalloyed support and cooperation in spreading the dividends of democracy across the state.

The associations equally thanked the immediate past governor of the state, Senator Bukola Saraki, for what it described as his purposeful leadership during his tenure, stating that such recognition to past leaders of the state was the reason the late governor Lawal became a beneficiary of the honour.

The state’s Commissioner for Sports, Mr Anthony Towoju recently announced the government’s decision to honour the late Lawal after last week’s state executive council meeting, stating that with the new development, the Ilorin Golf Club would henceforth be called Lawal Golf Club.

He said that the post-humous award conferred on the former governor of the state was in recognition of his contributions to sports development in the state when he was governor between 1999 and 2003.

The commissioner said the government noted and appreciated the face lift given to the Ilorin Golf Club by the late governor, adding that the golf club was rated the second best in the country shortly after taking off.

The Kwara state government had also honoured the late Super Eagles striker, Rashidi Yekini by naming the popular CBN Quarters-Ola-Olu road after him.

On his contributions to football development, the Sports Commissioner said the late striker had done the nation and his home state proud, a reason he said the late gangling striker for the Super Eagles deserved some sorts of immortalisation.

He said Yekini’s contributions had also gone a long way in putting the state on the world map.

He said the state government was committed to rewarding anyone who had worked for the socio economic development of the state.
