The relocation of the permanent camp of the Nigerian Youths Service Corps (NYSC) from Jalingo to Suntai, home town of the state governor, has started causing ripples in Taraba state House of Assembly.

A member of the assembly, Honourable Ibrahim Immam, representing Jalingo 1 Constituency, queried the rationale of the government for taking such a step.

The lawmaker said the government had no right to relocate the NYSC camp on the basis that the plan was never listed in the 2012 budget proposal, just as he demanded for explanation from the Commissioner of Youths in the state, Alhaji Abdulhadi Haruna Lau.

While defending the 2012 budget, last Saturday, the commissioner told the House Committee of the ministry that a new NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp would be constructed in Suntai Village in Bali Local Government Area while over N1billion had been allocated for the project which was expected to be completed within the first quarter of this year.

His explanation did not go down well with committee members who expressed surprise that the relocation had no space in the 2012 budget presented by the governor, Dambaba Suntai, last December.

The commissioner further told the committee that the NYSC camp, currently under construction in Jalingo, the state capital, would be converted to a Comprehensive Science Secondary School, adding that the ministry generated over N1million as revenue in the last fiscal year.

He, therefore, requested the committee to adjust the budget allocation upward to enable his ministry complete the NYSC orientation camp in Suntai.

The chairman of the committee, Honourable Ibrahim Imam, however, reserved comments on the request by the commissioner, stating that the committee would give an appropriate response during the official oversight visit of its members to the NYSC camp site to ascertain the level of construction.
