THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has settled for January 2011 for the conduct of the general election into all political offices.

The commission, in an advertorial placed in two national newspapers on Wednesday, also said elections would hold in 32 states of the federation.

Though the commission is yet to officially release the timetable for the conduct of next year’s elections, there are indications that the commission has settled for January 2011.

The commission, had before Wednesday, proposed to hold the 2011 elections either in January or April 2011.

In the said advertorial entitled: “Independent National Electoral Commission: Conduct of Governorship Elections” and signed by the secretary to the Commission, Abdullahi A. Kangama, INEC specifically stated that governorship elections will hold in all the states of the country in January 2011 except in four states.

“Pursuant to the powers conferred on the Independent National Electoral Commission by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2010 and all other powers conferred on it in that behalf, INEC hereby informs all stakeholders and the general public that governorship elections will hold in all the states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in January 2011, except in Rivers, Edo, Ondo and Anambra states,” the statement said.

The dates of elections in the affected four states, according to INEC are Rivers, June 2011; Edo, July 2012; Ondo, November 2012 and Anambra, November 2014.

The commission said the clarification became necessary “by the amendments to Section 180 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and judicial pronouncement on the tenure of state governor.

It, therefore, urged all political parties to make preparation to nominate candidates for the elections.
