STRONG indications emerged in Minna, Niger State, on Tuesday, that former military president, General Ibrahim  Babangida, may be preparing to realise

his presidential ambition on the ticket of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The speculations were reinforced, following the hijacking of the leadership of the ACN by politicians believed to be very loyal to the former military president.

The action of  Babangida’s men, according to Nigerian Tribune findings, has already caused crisis in the  political party.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that when the leadership of the ACN met on Sunday, it was agreed that a member of the House of Representatives and former All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP)  member, Alhaji Bala Adamu Kuta, was elected as the Technical Committee chairman and Alhaji  Yahaya Ismaila Atsu was picked as secretary.

The meeting of all the leaders of groups that metamorphosed into the ACN, including those of the AC, fragments of the PDP and the DPP held at Gidam Matsa, was presided over by one-time North-Central zone vice chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji.

Magaji is currently a member of the National Technical Committee of the party and a pro-IBB politician.
However, on Monday evening, the pro-IBB group in the ACN announced a new leadership for the party with former chief political adviser to Governor Abdulkhadir Kure, Captain Abubakar Isah Mokwa (rtd), picked as chairman.

Another IBB loyalist, Alhaji Ibrahim Inga, was named as the new secretary of the ACN.

Alhaji Bala Kuta, reacting to the development, described the action of his party men as “a calculated attempt to cause confusion in our party.”

“If they want IBB to contest on the ticket of the ACN, they should be bold enough to tell all of us.

“They don’t have the interest of the party at heart; they want to cause confusion. They have a hidden agenda,” Kuta said.

The Technical Committee chairman, who maintained that he remained the leader of the party, said he would still try to invite the people to a roundtable  and “if they fail, I will report them to the National Technical Committee.”

Neither Captain Isah Mokwa nor Alhaji Adamu Aliyu, who signed the statement announcing new leaders for the party could be reached for their comments at press time.
