Praises are due to Allah, the Lord of the universe, who has prohibited all immoral acts, the obvious and the hidden. I bear witness that Prophet Muhammad is His servant and messenger. Islam as a religion seeks to cleanse human souls by means of good morals, and guides human societies against all forms of immoral attitudes. It also protects religion, lives, human dignity, intellects, and wealth.

At this stage of human existence, man seems to be moving fast away from the guidance of Allah. Man is acting with whims and caprices, treading the path of satan, thus losing his intellect and descending to the level of animals. This situation is well captured by Allah in the Holy Quran. “And surely we have created many of the Jinn and mankind for hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not, and they have eyes wherewith they see not and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray, those! They are the heedless ones” (Suratul A’raf: 179)

Homosexuality through the ages
A recourse to historical origin of homosexuality shows that this abnormal sexual act is not a product of the modern times, rather, it has been a long time misnomer. Even though it may be difficult to say with precision the inventor of this act, but going through the Q’uran, we find that the first human community to make homosexuality an acceptable order in their community was that of Prophet Lut.

In the Holy Quran, it is stated “And remember Lut when he said to his people ‘you commit al-fahishah (sodomy) - the worst sin) which none has preceded you in commiting it in the a’lamin. Verily you practise sodomy with men, ....” (Al-Ankabut:28-29)

To this people, homosexuality had become the rule, while to them marriage of men and women was an abnormality even to the extent that they saw Lut in this light. To them, Lut had brought a strange thing into their community. Thus, they intended that Lut and his followers, the preachers of marriage between men and women, should be expelled. “There was no other answer given by his people except that they said: ‘Drive out the family of Lut from your city’. Verily, these are men who want to be clean and pure” (an-Naml: 56)

This act continued to appear here and there through the ages but perpetrated by a few individuals and detested by the general masses. The trend continued until the 20th century when this act of the people of Lut appeared even in a worst fashion and gloomy picture. This was due to the involvement of learned men, physicians and thinkers.

Precisely in 1973, the United States of America held a national conference for medical doctors in San Francisco, where the issue of homosexuality was discussed in detail. But the conference came out with a strange resolution that homosexuality was a normal and natural sexual relation. Thus, those practising it were normal human beings, who should be accorded the right to choose which form of sexual relations they prefer. Since that time, the number of those who proclaim this act had increased.

Essence of marriage
Marriage between male and female is a natural phenomenon among all living creatures-plants, animals and man. This has been the case since the time when Adam and Hawah were evolved. This has not been ordained by Allah for mere play. There are several objectives which marriage sets out to achieve in the life of man. This is the wisdom behind the enactment of the law guiding marriage between man and woman. These objectives include:

(i) Sexual instinct is one of the greatest instincts that can be found in man. It enables man to attain peace of mind and rest as it gives satisfaction to the soul. The Holy Quran says: “And among His signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them...” (Suratur-Rum: 21)

(ii) Marriage is the best means of procreation. In verses quoted above, Allah says “..... and He has put between you affection and mercy, verily, in that are, indeed, signs for a people who reflect.” According to some scholars, ‘mercy’ here implies children. The Prophet of Islam, while admonishing on the essence of marriage between a man and a woman says: “marry virgings, and bear children so I could be proud through you among other prophets.

(iii) Complementary roles of both the man and the woman towards raising a righteous generation. The social problems which are prevalent today is as a result of the inability of men and women to play those roles.

(iv) Sound health and longetivity of life. According to a report of the United Nations based on a global research work in 1958 and published in 1959, it was reported that married man and woman live longer than the unmarried. This report further highlighted that death rate among the married is lower than that of the unmarried.

Implications  of the practice of  homosexuality
Homosexuality is one of the worst crimes against creation, nature, religion and human existence. Its implications on the individuals and the society at large are manifold. Dr Muhammed, in his book entitled “Islam and Medicine” lists these implications to include:

(1) Aversion for women. Those who practise homosexuality usually don’t have desire for women. This negates one of the essence of marriage, procreation, which can only occur through cohabitation between men and women. Where individuals are compelled to have same sex wives or husbands, such people are deprived of love, mercy and tranquillity, which are the targets of marriage.

(2) Negative impacts on the nerves. This habit is injurious to the soul as it impacts negatively on the soul. This results into attack of psychological reflex in the character of the individual. He thinks that he ought not to have been created as a male. That is why you see gays dressing like women, especially those who occupy the portion of ‘wives’ in this animalistic tendency.

(3) Negative impacts on the brain. It causes great disorder in the equilibrium level of human intellect. His perception of issue is thus affected. There is a strong relationship between homosexuality and the proper function of the brain.
