Following the completion of various National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) in Lagos, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has assured that the projects will supply about 190 megawatts of electricity to consumers in the Eko zone under the auspices of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company.

This was revealed during the official commissioning of the 1 x15 MVA, 33/11kv transformer at the NITEL Injection Substation, 2x60 MVA 132/33kva injection substations at Ojo and other various facility upgraded in the Eko zone, in Lagos.

It was also revealed that 242 transformers had been installed in Olorunshogo area of Mushin with over 3,000 households benefiting from the installations. Moreso, Omotosho power plant is expected to generate additioanl 500MW before December.

Chief Executive Officer NDPHC, Mr James Olotu, said “Omotosho Power Plant Phase ll is ready to contribute additional 500 megawatts to the national grid by December. Unit 3 out of the four units in Omotosho is already contributing about 375MW into the national grid while the last unit will come on stream by December to make 500 megawatts.”

According to the CEO, Eko Distribution Company, Mr Oladele Amoda, the efforts were geared towards stopping the incessant load shedding which had always been responsible for the irregular electricity supply.

“We used to have problem of overloading due to the small capacity transformers available but now we have 36 MW from the installation of 45mva transformers at the Nitel injection Substation.

“Other equipments were also installed to replace obsolete equipments which were hitherto risky to operate, hence electricity has become stable in the area and the consumers now believe that power can be delivered due to the notice of improvements since load shedding has stopped,” he pointed out.

He further noted that the company was making efforts such that by December, majority of the projects would have been commissioned for the customers to enjoy steady supply.

He also noted that the transformers hung on poles would also experienced reduction of vandalism. He revealed that there were 27 NIPP in the Eko zone which include 10 brand new injection substations, and additional 15 MVA transformers being installed in diverse locations in the zone to reinforce existing ones.

The announcement of the preferred bidders for the 11 power distribution companies (Discos) unbundled from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) by the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) on October 29, 2012 brought to a climax, the much anticipated privatisation of public power utilities in the country.
