Recently, the University of Ilorin Students’ Union held her first ever female soccer competition. Bakare Wale, 200 Level Zoology, unilOrin reports.

The first ever female football tournament in the University of Ilorin has been held. The female competition called Five-Aside-Inter-Faculty Competition involved all faculties of the university except College of Health Sciences due to their inability to provide a female team.

The competition was  officially opened  by the Students' Union President, Comrade Musa Surajudeen, in company of the Public Relations Officer, Rasheed Awonuga, General Secretary, Hameed Ayuba, the Speaker House of Representatives, Honourable Abass  Adeniyi, Sports Secretary, Michael Are and other members of the students' union.

Green House, Faculty of Agriculture versus Yellow House, Faculty of Science featured at the  commencement of the competition. The first half of the match lacked serious action due to inadequate preparation of the teams and spectorship freight while in the second half, the teams had gainedstrength and where able to display their soccer skills. Taiwo Diya of the Faculty of Sciences scored the first goal in the tournament.Faculty of Science defeated faculty of Agriculture by 2 goals to nil.

Second match of the competition was between Arts and Business and Social Science(BSS) Faculty, the match was interesting because they had learnt their lessons from the first match. Folake Ayoniyi of Faculty  Arts scored a goal within the first two minutes of the match.  BSS  equalised but the match ended  3 goals to 1 in favour of Faculty of Arts. Education defeated communication and information science 4 to nil.

The last match of the 1st round was not one of the best outing as the Faculty of Law team was too active on the field in contrast to their counterpart, Faculty of Engineering that played with low morale. Law won with 2 goals nil.

The faculties that made it to the semi final were Science, Art, Education and Law. As the competition got to an end, the interest of the students were arosed to watch the team that would stand out among others. As the semi final kicked off between Science and Art Faculties. Arts won with 2 to 0. Law and Education played a tough match which ended in a gaoless draw. Law carried the day with 2 goals to 1 on penalty shoot out. Science and Education fought for the third place, while Education emerged winner after defeating Faculty of  Science a lone goal.

At the final stage, the competition witnessed mass turnout of students who came to grace the final. Dignitaries present were the Dean, Students’ Affair, Professor S.A Umoh, the Sub Dean, Students Affair Unit, Lectures, Coaches of each faculty and the students’ union members. Kicking off the match was a pass from the faculty of law  that impressed supports with the way they displayed skills in the competition right from the beginning,  making the way bright to the end. The match was  a very keen competition  as none of the two teams  scored a goal at the 1st and 2nd half of the game,  athough faculty of Law made many goal attempts during the match. If not for the help of the Faculty of Art goal keeper, they would have been defeated woeful. But at the end of the match, without any goal from both sides, the penalty whistle was blown and faculty of law won 1 by 0 in the penalty kicks.

The Sport Secretary, in his interaction with Campuslife, said, “ this competition is what I promised during my campaign. It is also a preparation to choose the best among the female for the upcoming West Africa University Game (WAUG).”
