30-year-old drunk jailed 3 months for damaging windscreen

A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to three months imprisonment with an option to pay N20,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to damaging a car windscreen while drunk.

Michael Olaosi was convicted by the Ogudu Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for damaging the car windscreen, valued at N15,000.

Chief Magistrate Yetunde Aje-Afunwa said there was no point keeping the convict in custody since he had owned up to the crime.

``The accused is hereby sentenced to three months imprisonment with an option of N20,000 fine.

``I believe the accused will learn from his mistake and caution himself while drinking so that he won’t drink to stupor,’’ said the chief magistrate.

Police prosecutor Gbenga Salami had told the court that the offence was committed on July 14 at No. 7 Oshogbo Street, Ori-Oke, Ogudu, Lagos.

He said the accused, a commercial driver, who lives inside the Ojota Motor Park, broke the windscreen of a car belonging to one Sunday Abidoye, while under the influence of alcohol.

Salami said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 337 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
