THE Kogi State government has banned, in the interim, all illegal mining activities in the disputed areas between Egbe and Akumarun communities namely, Okunran,Okoloke and Isanlu Esan.

The  people living in the disputed area are, however, free to farm, go to school in the area in the spirit of forgiveness.

Kogi State government made the pronouncement at a meeting with representatives of the affected communities at the weekend.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, the deputy governor, Yomi Awoniyi who is also the Chairman, Kogi State Boundary Committee, said any breach of the order to carry out mining in the affected areas will meet the full weight of the law.

Awoniyi maintained that the government was resolved and committed to a peaceful resolution of the disput and called for the full cooperation of the affected communities.

While acknowledging that the dispute has existed for long, the deputy government said he was optimistic that the crisis would be resolved through dialogue.

The deputy governor said it was unacceptable for people to take the laws into their hands, adding that an inquiry to determine the trouble makers will be established to arrest the culprits.

While noting  that development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, he warned youths against being used to forment trouble.

The deputy governor appealed for peace and urged the elders against inciting the youth to carry out destruction.
