Residents of Obalende and its environs on Lagos Island, have called on the state government  to stop cases of incessant clashes among various youth clubs in the area.

Community News gathered from residents that the area has not known peace in the last few days  when one of the strong members of a group died from gun bullets allegedly fired by members of a rival group.

Again, last Monday, two other young men were allegedly killed by hoodlums fight for  superiority among one another.

Speaking with Community News, a trader, Mrs. Iyabode Lawal, lamented that they had been in crisis since last Friday. She alleged that hoodlums, weilding dangerous weapons were patrolling the area.

“We are calling on the men of the Lagos State Police Command to come and restore peace in our community. Things are degenerating very fast, it requires the intervention of the Lagos State government to draft law enforcement officers to the area to maintain peace”.

Another trader, Mrs. Uwen Jacob, lamented that she lost her bag containing money, handsets and other valuables to the hoodlums on Saturday when they went on the rampage in the area.

“The unrest caught me unwares. I was in my shop when these thugs came from nowhere and surrounded my shop. Before I could shout for help, they had taken my bag away”.

Mrs Jacob explained that she has not recovered from the shock since that day.

“We want government to draft more policemen to Eti-Osa Local Government to curb the menace of ‘Area Boys’. These boys are idle and are always willing to cause mayhem to survive. They kill at will and they are ready-made tools in the hands of the devil. Government must do something to stop social unrest in our community.”

In his own response to the mayhem, Alhaji Lawal Yisau, Chief Imam of Adura Lere Mosque, Obalende, explained that the only solution to the problem of social unrest in the area is for the local and state governments to come out with a policy that would provide jobs for the youth.

“These youths are jobless. They roam around the streets everyday. The only way to ensure peace is for the government  at the local and state levels to provide jobs for the youth. Arresting them or putting them behind bars would not solve any problem,” he said.
