Teacher, 2 pupils drown in Adamawa - Matron dies of snake bite

30.07.2008

A teacher, Malam Dahiru Mohammed and two pupils, Hamza Ibrahim and Mohammed Ashiru, have drowned in a pond in Dazala village in Mubi South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Also, the Matron of Government Secondary School, Mubi in Mubi North Local Government Area, Hauwa Usman, has died from snake bite while fishing in a stream in Muchala village.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ibrahim and Ashiru were swimming in the pond when one of them, who was drowning, shouted for help.

NAN learnt that it was in an attempt to save his friend that the second boy also drowned. The teacher, Malam Mohammed, who was working on his farm near the pond, was said to have rushed to assist them.

He too reportedly drowned while attempting to rescue the children. The development, NAN gathered, frightened the villagers, who rushed to Mubi town to seek the help of fire service personnel.

“They came here to report the incident to us and we mobilised and rushed to the pond where we recovered the three bodies,” Mr. Jibrin Malgwi of the state fire service said.

Malgwi, an Assistant Zonal Fire Officer, described the incident as tragic and urged parents not to allow their children to go swimming in streams.

While confirming the death of the matron, the Principal of the school, Mr. Ali Arnado, said she was bitten while fishing along with other women in a stream at Muchala village, in Mubi North Local Government Area.
