Promoting science education to address economic meltdown
SOME scientists in
the country led by
Professor Adenike Osofisan have postulated that Nigeria would need to intensify its efforts in developing science education to address economic meltdown.
This was their resolve at the national conference organised by the School of Science, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, recently.
Professor Osofisan said the combination of science and technology had become inevitable to foster creative basic research to promote scientific advancement and expand sources of technological innovation.
She called for man- power development in science and technology.
“There would be mass increase in the production of scientists and engineers in the country and tertiary institutions should be equipped for basic research. Institutes responsible for mission-oriented sector should collaborate with the government to finance research and development geared towards industrial technologies,” she said.
She added that the product of science and technology had contributed to development in America, Japan, China, among others.
The chief host of the conference, Dr. Emmanuel Adeniyi, said experts from tertiary institutions should constantly engage in academic discourse that would centre on the emerging problem in the society with a view to developing appropriate strategies to make the problem to our advantage.
Dr. Mopelola Akin-Taylor, Dean, School of Science of the host institution, said the current world economic crisis informed the theme of the conference to deliberate on the possible ways which science could provide answers to revitalise the situation, especially in Nigeria.
