"THE gang was very unlucky that night. It had already settled for business on the busy Sagamu/Benin Expressway when our team ambushed and crushed the gang. The gang operated as if it was invincible. I think members of the gang must have been assured by their herbalist that they would never be apprehended.

“The dare-devil, seven-man gang was well armed and battle ready that when it sighted our patrol team, the bandits opened fire immediately. When they noticed that they could not withstand our superior firepower, they fled into the forest. But one of them, Bayo (not realname) was unlucky

“He was caught half naked while trying to rape a lady. We rained bullets on him.

“Our intention was not to kill him, but when he saw us he used one hand to fire shots at us while using the second hand to dress up.

“He was about to rape the lady when we arrived the scene. Our bullets shattered a part of his buttocks”.

That was the statement a police officer attached to the Ogun State Police Command Eleweran, Abeokuta, explaining how the patrol team foiled attempt by some robbers to gang-rape a lady along Sagamu-Benin Expressway.

police patrol team in Ogun StateIt was a sad end for the notorious gang that has for a long time taken over the Sagamu/Benin Expressway dis-possessing the people of their money and other valua-bles. However, the gang was unlucky on that fateful day as the police put paid to their dazzling escapades when it snuffed life out of Bayo, the group’s leader.

Sunday Tribune learnt from the police source that the gang as usual applied their charms to escape, but the charms failed them. According to the police, the gang was met operating and the police opened fire on them. While other members of the gang fled, the leader could not as he had removed his trouser in order to rape a lady.

The woman, a young lady confessed that the gang leader held her at gun point and ordered her to remove her dress.

Speaking on the death of the armed robber, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr. Femi Awoyale explained that it was judgment day for the dead armed robber as he was over-powered by the superior fire power of our men. Sunday Tribune gathered that the dead armed robber could mutter out some words for about 10 minutes before he died due to injuries he sustained from gun shots.

The robber was said to have confessed saying that he met his waterloo because he refused to listen to advices of his wife.

Some items recovered from the scene of the operations and displayed by the police were; one locally made single barrel gun, three live cartridges and large quantity of charms.

Mr. Awoyale said that efforts are on to arrest other fleeing members of the gang. He advised members of the public to always furnish the police with all the necessary information that can lead to the arrest of criminals.

 

Police nab 15-year-old over okada theft

It was argument galore at the Ogun State Police Command, Eleweran, Abeokuta recently when the police paraded some hardened criminals. Among the armed robbery suspects was a 15- year -old boy, Akeem who despite the police’s confirmation that he was an armed robbery suspect, denied any involvement in armed robbery operation. The boy said that he was just a victim of circumstance.

Police source told Sunday Tribune that the suspect was a member of a two-man armed robbery gang that specialised in snatching motorcycles from commercial motorcycle operators

Sunday Tribune also gathered that the suspect was apprehended during a robbery operation by his gang at a place very close to Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta..
It was gathered that the suspect and his partners armed with knife chased and disposed one, Muritala Ashimi of his brand new JINCHENG commercial motorcycle.

Stating his own side of the story, the suspect, Akeem denied any involvement in the crime. He said that he was just a victim of circumstance. “My name is Akeem, I am 15 years old. I attended Holy Trinity Primary School. After that, I trained as a welder. But because of my hard financial situation, I decided to be using Okada for commercial

“ I don’t know the gang I am a commercial motorcyclist. I am not a member of any armed robbery gang. The man that stole the motorbike was just my passenger. He alighted from a commercial bus, Nissan Urvan and he approached me and he introduced himself as a police man. He requested that I should give him ride to Ita Oshin, we agreed on the price and I took him. When we get to a point at Ita Oshin, he told me that he was chasing an Okada man that I should more fast.

“As we were going he saw an okada man coming and he immediately approached the victim and brought out a knife. He forcefully collected the motorbike from the victim and zoomed off.. When he noticed that I was not cooperating with him, he took the key of my motorbike so that I don’t run away.

“He threatened to stab me if I tried to do anything funny, that was how he took the bike away. I don’t know him from Adam”. He said. But a source at the State Police Command said that Akeem was not sincere. “He is an accomplice to the crime. Infact, it was the quick intervention of the Police that saved him from being mobbed. He is a member of the gang. The gang specialises in snatching motorbike from the people.

Speaking on the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Awoyale confirmed the arrest.
