Chukwumerije raises alarm over alleged imposition of LG chairman
Biola Azeez, Umuahia - 29.01.2008
Senator representing Abia North senatorial zone, Uche Chukwumerije, has cried out over alleged imposition of the Umunneochi Local Government chairman and councillors in Abia State on the people during the last council poll, calling on the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) and the People Progressive Alliance (PPA) leaders to conduct fresh election in the council area.
It will be recalled that ABSIEC had declared Oliver Egeonu of the PPA the winner of the just concluded council poll for the Umunneochi Local Government Area with the party winning 19 wards while the Action Congress (AC) having one ward which happens to be Chukwumereje’s ward.
Speaking with journalists on Monday, Senator Chukwumerije advised the PPA leadership to avoid anti-democratic style of political management which he said, could compromise democratic integrity and growth in the country.
He said that the people of Umunneochi were yet to enjoy equality, independence of choice and respect like other local government areas in the state.
He, charged the party loyalists in the state to work as a team in order to develop PPA into a major national alternative platform which would offer Nigeria a creative new beginning.
Senator Chukwumerije, who said he had written protest letters to the ABSIEC and the leadership of the party over alleged imposition of council chairman and councillors, said that he would not take laws into his hands or encourage his supporters to foment trouble.
