Flood victims storm Zamfara House - Demand compensation

ABOUT 600 victims of last year’s flood disaster in Zam-fara State stormed the State House of Assembly demanding compensation from the state government.

The leader of the delegation, Alhaji Sani Wakala, said in a written submission to the Speaker of the House, that “since the state government gave them another land for settlement, nothing has been forthcoming”.

“We are still homeless. Most of us do not have a house we can call our own since our houses have been destroyed by the flood”, he said.

According to him, the farmland given to them is still being used by some farmers who are still claiming ownership. “The people of Unguwar Sinami, who were affected by the flood are hereby calling on the State House of Assembly to assist.”

Commenting on the issue, deputy governor, Alhaji Muktari Ahmed Anka, said that he was aware that a committee had been formed since last government to take care of the plight of the victims.

“In fact, I recall that the former governor insisted that a representative of the victims and traditional rulers were part of the committee with the Head of Service as the chairman. We are aware the committee has been sitting since. Only the Head of Service can adequately inform us about the workings of the committee and unfortunately, he is not around now.”
