NURTW members attack teacher in Ibadan

28.02.2008

A PRIMARY school teacher in Ona-Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State was on Wednesday attacked by some members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at Iwo Road area of Ibadan.

The teacher, Mr. Sola Adeagbo, was attacked by members of the union when his colleague, Mr. Gabriel Olaniyan, wanted to give him a ride at a motor park in Iwo Road.

According to him, “the tout demanded for N20 from my friend before they could allow him to pick me at the bus stop, but he explained to them that we are colleagues and that he was not a commercial driver, but they insisted that we must give them something, which we resisted. During the argument, they attacked me with a machete.”

He also said the hoodlums dispossessed him of N28,800 and a Samsung handset, while Mr. Olaniyan also lost N12,500 to the touts.

Adeagbo said the money was taken from him when he became unconscious after the attack.

As at the time of this report, the victim was receiving treatment at the Adeoyo General Hospital, Yemetu, Ibadan, while the touts have been arrested and detained at the state police area command Iwo Road.

A senior police officer at the station, who preferred anonymity confirmed the incident and assured that “the touts will be prosecuted for stealing and attempted murder.”
