Ondo to establish medical college

The government of Ondo State will soon establish a College of Medicine at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba- Akoko. Dr. Kehinde Adedeji, the Commissioner for Health, disclosed this on Sunday in Akure while responding to questions on a radio programme.

He said that the establishment of the college was long overdue, adding that government had commenced the process of upgrading some general hospitals into specialist hospitals.

The upgrading he said, would be embarked on by providing the hospitals with modern equipment and adequate medical personnel to handle health-related cases.

Adedeji said that arrangements had also been concluded to provide financial and other resources needed for a viable medical college in the state, that would compete favourably with similar colleges.

He urged prospective students aspiring to read medicine to be patient and promised that the college would soon commence academic activities.

Adedeji said that admission into the School of Health Technology, Akure, for the 2007/2008 session was delayed because accreditation letters for some courses were issued late.

He commended the administration of governor Olusegun Agagu for fulfilling its promise of providing good healthcare services for all, through the provision of one general hospital and a comprehensive health centre in the 18 local government areas.

He said that two general hospitals would soon be completed in two local government councils.
