NPC requires N14bn to complete 2006 census project

THE Director General of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Wokoma Wokoma, has said N14 billion was still required to complete the Census 2006 project.

He said on Wednesday in Abuja that although provisional results of Census 2006 had been released, the amount would be used to process, analyse, develop monographs and publish all the data derived from it.

Wokoma told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the money would also be used to perform other statutory responsibilities expected of NPC in 2008.

He, also said the Federal Government had made provision for N2.181 billion as capital allocation to NPC, from where funds for the completion of the 2006 census project would be obtained.

Based on what would be provided, Wokoma said NPC would publish final results of the 2006 census as it affected the nation, states and the local government areas within the first quarter or second quarter of 2008.

He said other variables, such as locality, age group, sex and occupational figures would be published in due course, but “ bit by bit, based on the availability of fund.”

The director general said the commission had completed occupational coding from data generated from the 2006 census.

Wokoma explained why locality figures would be published much later, saying “it is because of the complexity and ambiguity of the concept of locality.”
