last Saturday. Photo Getty ImagesFORMER Super Eagles technical adviser, Clemens Westerhof says Nigeria should have beaten Tunisia in last weekend’s goalless draw in Rades during a 2010 World Cup qualifier.
Speaking with Tribunesports in Ilorin, Westerhof said: “The draw was a good result. It favours Nigeria but I would have liked it more if the Eagles had won. I believe Nigeria had the team to win and could have won.”
When he was in charge of Nigeria, Westerhof recalled he never played for draw.
“I’m not in charge of coaching of Nigeria, so I don’t have to query the options of the coaches but I know Nigeria has talented players who are given to attacking football and when you have that kind of players, as a coach, you only think of winning.”
He said Nigeria caused the greatest scare of the match against Tunisia when the players dared to score.
“Osaze’s pull-out was world class but Eneramuo lacked the composure to find the target. The Eagles should have followed up that miss by consistent attacks and the Tunisians would have caved in,” he said.
He praised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over the composition of the coaching crew especially with the inclusion of his former international, Daniel Amokachi.
“He knows how it is, he should motivate the team while Amodu concentrates on team building,” said Westerhof.
