Ekiti requires N27bn to renovate schools

Ekiti State government has said that it required N27 billion to renovate primary and junior secondary schools.

The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), Mr Dayo Adeyeye, said on Tuesday at a forum in Ado-Ekiti, that only 20 per cent of the schools were habitable.

Adeyeye blamed the development on the lack of concern of previous administrations in the state for the welfare of elementary education.

He expressed disappointment on the poor learning environment under which school pupils were made to take lessons.

He commended the Federal Government for its annual N700 million educational grant to the state.

Reacting, the state governor, Mr Segun Oni, said it was criminal for anyone to have allowed himself to be used in creating inconvenience for the poor children in primary schools in the recent past.

He said it was now an offence for any school headmaster or junior school principal not to maintain a functioning toilet and other basic amenities in their various schools.

The governor also announced a ban on the practice whereby pupils were required to carry tables and chairs from home to school for their use.
