Oyo earmarks N44m for library development

OYO State government has earmarked N44 million to develop the public library in the state. The governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, disclosed this on Tuesday at the official inauguration of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre of the state library board.

According to Chief Alao-Akala, the government was planning to upgrade V-Sat for the board and computerise all the major functions and activities of state’s libraries in some local government areas in the state.

The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Professor Nureni Olawore, described ICT as an indispensable facility in library operations.

He enjoined the potential users of the new ICT centre to cooperate with the library board to ensure effective use of the centre and called on well-to-do citizens to support the government in its bid to develop the centre for qualitative education delivery in the state.

The President, Nigerian Library Association, Mrs. Victoria Okojie, commended the government for its commitment to education development.

She called on the government to deploy more resources in the development of public and school libraries to boost education reform process in the state.

The state Librarian and General Manager of the board, Mr. Emmnauel Oyegade, commended the government for the provision of the ICT centre, saying that the centre was open to students and the public free.
