Commonwealth gets new Secretary-Generalt

THE Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) today in Kampala elected Mr Kamalesh Sharma as secretary-general to succeed Mr Don McKinnon.

Sharma, who is the current Indian High Commissioner to the UK, was elected by a unanimously vote at a retreat for the heads of government at the lakeside resort of Munyonyo.

According to officials of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Sharma will assume office on April 1.

In a post-election remark, the Indian said he had always cherished the ideals of the Commonwealth and would work for its continued growth.
