Teachers to commence strike next week if ...

THE Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Tuesday declared that a nationwide indefinite strike action would begin next Tuesday if the Federal Government failed to implement the Teachers Salary Structure (TSS).

But in a reaction, the Federal Government said it was doing its best to resolve the issue and that it would top the agenda at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting today.

The Federal Govern-ment’s reaction did not, however, stop the NUT from directing all teachers in the country to commence the strike on Tuesday next week, unless a counter directive was given to them by the NUT National Executive Council (NEC).

Rising from its emergency NEC meeting on Tuesday at the NUT Headquarters, Abuja, the body resolved that if the enabling circular and the implementation of the TSS were unduly delayed, all the teachers should embark on the nationwide strike on Tuesday.

The NUT, in a communique after the meeting, read by its National Deputy President, Comrade Onem Nelson Onem, said “all teachers in primary and secondary schools throughout the country are hereby directed to remain at home and to embark on a nationwide indefinite strike action with effect from Tuesday, 1st July 2008 unless otherwise directed by the NEC of the NUT.”
