Lagos govt conducts EIA in Lekki Free Trade Zone

Ayeleso Oladele, Lagos - 25.04.2008

The Lagos State government has concluded arrangements to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) before any investment in the area.

The Managing Director of Lekki Worldwide Investments Ltd. (LWIL), Mr. Tajudeen Disu, who said this on Thursday in Lagos, while briefing newsmen, said that EIA was necessary to attract investors.
He said no foreign investor would invest in a place where no reliable impact assessment had been carried out.

The Lekki Free Trade Zone, according to him, was an area spanning about 16,500 hectares, launched by the government in 2004 as part of its transformation programmes.

According to him, ‘’there is no doubt that the LFTZ is still in its natural state with the ecosystem, unpolluted green lands and ecological lakes and Lagoons.

‘’But with the effects of global warming gradually being felt in cities and towns of the world today, we are set to first carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment in the area.
