FG begins payment of disengaged workers next month
25.03.2008
The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) will, from next month, begin the payment of benefits to 15, 227 disengaged workers of parastatal agencies, a senior official has said.
The official told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that N19 billion had been set aside for the payment, which would cover 11 federal parastatal agencies.
The workers were disengaged last year with a promise that they would get their cheques after a training workshop on entrepreneurship in April, but a year later, that had not been paid.
Investigations by the NAN revealed that some of the workers had resorted to begging and petty trading to survive, while others were reinstated in their former places of work.
