Again, 10 escape death on OBJ’s highway

Bankole Makinde, Abuja - 23.03.2008

TEN people, on Friday cheated death along Olusegun Obasanjo Way, opposite Bolingo Hotel, Abuja.

The unsavory development came on the heels of the death of about 10 commuters penultimate Friday in a ghastly motor accident at the spot, which is now dubbed “the Abuja point of death”.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, while reacting to the unfortunate accident, however declared that accidents on the spot would continue unabated until drivers learn to obey traffic rules and regulations.

A chieftain of FRSC on the spot of the accident which occurred around 12:30pm, Mrs. E.E.Fekoya, said whether an overhead bridge is constructed or not on the spot, Nigerians would continue to lose their lives until they have respect for traffic rules.

She said that law enforcement agents would henceforth arrest drivers who answer calls on their GSM sets while behind the wheels, as such caused the Abuja fatal accident on Friday.

The accident which involved a Peugeot 504 GL Car with registration number Adamawa AA845 NUM and a Nissan Primera did not however lead to the death of occupants of both ill-fated vehicles.

The driver of the Primera car along with five of her children luckily escaped unhurt, while the driver of the Peugeot 504 car and another occupant were rushed to the General Hospital, Wuse, Abuja for emergency treatment resulting from internal injury sustained by them.

Officials of the FRSC and the Police as at 1:40pm towed the Peugeot 504 car to an unknown destination, while onlookers described the spot as a “zone of death” which the FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, must urgently look into.

Funnily, at exactly, 2:30pm, two vehicles, a Toyota Camry and a 1986 Honda Accord model again collided at the same spot but without any casualty.
