Alaibe Seeks Media Support For Niger Delta

Bolaji Ogundele, Port Harcourt - 23.02.2008

MANAGING Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Timi Alaibe, has urged the mass media to partner with the commission to achieve sustainable development of the Niger Delta.

Mr. Alaibe stated this Thursday evening during a dinner organised for members of the Federated Correspondents Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State chapter, in Port Harcourt.

He said the media could assist by ensuring objectivity in reporting the commission.

According to the NDDC boss, the commission was being grossly represented by people who do not even understand its mandate areas.

He said the media as a sector being depended upon by the public for information owed the NDDC and the nation a duty to report its happenings correctly.

“So many times, we have seen people make demands that fall outside our mandate. You see them making all manners of utterances about us,’’ he said.

“But if journalists crosscheck facts before them and get reactions from us, we will not see all of the frightening headlines we see in the media,’’ he added.
