Movie Review:
One Careless Night

One Careless Night is the story of a
young couple-to-be – Kunle (Akinwumi Emmanuel) and Ronke (Jumoke Sasere).
Both go to their Pastor (Kayode Owoyori) to brief him about their upcoming wedding, only to be confronted with the result of a pregnancy test which shows that Ronke is pregnant.
Pastor Anthony refuses to officiate in a wedding where the bride is already pregnant. Thus, the wedding must be called off.
It turns out that Ronke, while searching for a job, had slept with her boss-to-be in order to clinch the job.
Having realised her mistake, she goes to meet her fiance late in the night in spite of his request to postpone the visit.
She sleeps in Kunle's apartment that night and they end up making love.
Kunle decides to make a calculation of the time both of them had sex together and discovers that it does not tally with the age of the pregnancy. Ronke was already pregnant for two weeks before the encounter. He refuses to take responsibility.
Ronke calls in Kunle's parents to intervene – all to no avail.
Ronke gets desperate and colludes with her father to charge Kunle with rape. Kunle is arrested and detained.
A reorganisation exercise takes place in Ronke's office and she is sacked.
She goes to meet her boss, who says he is helpless.
Eventually, Ronke becomes of unstable mind but keeps on saying that Kunle should be released as Kingsley, her boss, is the real culprit.
Kunle is eventually released.
The movie is vintage Mount Zion Production. However, there is need for improvement in certain areas.
In transiting from one scene to the other, a particular road and aerial view is always used. This is very common, not only in Mount Zion movies but also in Nollywood generally.
Nollywood movies always use the Apongbon bridge and other scenes in Lagos Island to transit from scene to scene. There are better ways to do this. For a television drama, it might be okay but for a movie? No. In any case, many Nollywood's so-called movies are not better than television drama series.
In a particular scene, Ronke goes to get the result of her pregnancy test – which comes out positive and she is shocked. The doctor barely looks at her, even in her state of shock, not to talk of even asking her a few questions.
Some of the amateurish acting often comes to the fore when Ronke cries. There is a time she cries for a few minutes and nobody sees any tears; and this is somebody trying very hard to get away with her lies against Kunle!
Again, there is a reference to when exactly Kunle and Ronke made love – which was already a month then. After several days of a series of events, Kunle still say, "Today makes exactly one month'. Definitely, it was over one month by then!
Beyond these few lapses, One Careless Night is a good movie and should score a B+.
