Man kills brother, burns corpse over N6,000

By Rotimi Omole - 22.05.2008

A 32-year-old Togolese identified as Yau Jajiti has been arrested by the police in Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly killing his brother, Ahmadu Kagbe Britel, during a scuffle.

Jajiti reportedly killed Britel for asking him to refund the N6,000 he collected from him (the deceased) when he (Jajiti) refused to work on his farm. A police source who spoke to the Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity said after committing the crime, Jajiti reportedly dragged the corpse of his brother to a bush, set it ablaze and later buried it in a shallow grave.

The incident, which occurred in Oko Oba near Kishi in Oyo State, was said to have been reported to the police when all efforts to locate the whereabouts of the deceased had failed. However, the cat was let out of the bag when the wife of the deceased, identified simply as Asana, insisted that Jajiti must produce her husband as he was the person that fought with him a few days earlier.

A search team organised by the villagers to locate the whereabouts of the deceased reportedly stumbled on the shallow grave where the deceased was buried.

Jajiti was said to have told the villagers earlier that the foul odour from the shallow grave was that of a cow recently burnt and buried by the Fulani herdsmen in the area.

Not convinced by this explanation, the villagers, who were becoming suspicious of Jajiti’s utterances, exhumed the carcass of the ‘cow,’ and to their amazement, it was the burnt corpse of a human being that they saw.
