Lagos approves N10bn to rehabilitate public schools

Lagos State government has approved the sum of N10 billion for the rehabilitation of public schools across the metropolis.

The Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Adebisi-Sosan, said this at the ministerial press briefing to mark the second year of Governor Babatunde Fashola in office on Wednesday.

Adebisi-Sosan, who oversees the state Ministry of Education, said that the rehabilitation was being carried out by the special committee on rehabilitation of public schools and the Universal Basic Education Board.

According to her, 80 new classroom blocks of 1, 941 classrooms were completed including 10 abandoned schools, while the construction of 12 classroom blocks were awarded with five at various level of completion.

Working with the resources at its disposal, she added that the board undertook the construction of three classrooms block with toilets in eight schools under the Education Trust Fund (ETF) intervention.

She stated that the state government was working towards achieving a target of 50 per classroom in all public schools in the state as part of measures for effective learning among the students.

According to her, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), which is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring unfettered access to universal basic education through its activities, has access to N413 million of education trust fund.
