Beckham proves fitness to Capello

DAVID Beckham's recent displays for the LA Galaxy have convinced England boss Fabio Capello that he is fit for duty

The midfielder put in a solid 90-minute display for his club last weekend, watched by Capello's assistant, Franco Baldini.

Capello has previously stressed that no player lacking in match fitness would be considered for future England squads, but despite the now regular match practice, Beckham is still not absolutely guaranteed a call-up to the next squad, to be announced tomorrow.

The England coach has vowed to judge each individual purely on merit, and doesn't intend to merely give Beckham his 100th international cap in the friendly against France.

However, The Sun newspaper have claimed that should the former Real Madrid star make Capello's initial 30-man squad it is highly unlikely that he would be dropped when the number is trimmed down to 23.
