Indiscriminate arrest won’t produce result - Detainee

20.01.2008

THE chairman, Ogun State chapter of the union, Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa yesterday said, that the on-going investigation into the gruesome murder of the Lagos State chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Alhaji Saka Saula cannot bring about any meaningful result by indiscriminate arrest of people but by in- depth scrutiny of all the available clues without any sentiment.

This was the opinion of one of the detainees in connection with the dastardly act, Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa who is the Chairman of Ogun State chapter of the union, while reacting to his incarceration in a chat with our reporter.

Alhaji Baruwa said there was nothing personal between him and the late Unionist to warrant his wishing him death, even though they were both together in the Union in Lagos State while he (Alhaji Baruwa) was the caretaker chairman in the state.

Washing his hands off of any complicity in the murder case, Alhaji Baruwa explained “I was only in Lagos State sometimes ago as the caretaker committee chairman and I was the one that midwife the chairmanship election that produced him and I cannot fathom why I should begrudge him to the extent of being involved in his killing”.

The Ogun NURTW helmsman said his allegiance should be to Ogun State, his home state having being born in Ota and having become everything he is presently using the town (Ota) as his base.

While serving as the Caretaker Chairman, Alhaji Baruwa disclosed that he was also the South West Vice Chairman of the Union and was contented with what had pleased the Almighty Allah to bless him with.

It would be recalled that the late Alhaji Saka Saula was mudered in cold blood by yet to be identified gun-men in his Iyana Ipaja residence two Sundays ago and it was in the course of the preliminary investigation that Alhaji Baruwa was picked up in his Abeokuta residence last Friday by Security men.

The detained unionist who said he had no ill-feeling against anybody over his ordeal appealed to the security agents not to be political in their investigation as his incarceration has no bearing with the case as they would later discover.
