Police arrest 19 over Ibadan detention camp

By Adeolu Adeyemo - 19.02.2008

Nineteen persons have been arrested so far by the police in Oyo State in connection with the illegal detention camp in Ibadan. Thirteen persons were earlier arrested by the police in connection with the camp while the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ms Bisi Okuwobi, said in Ibadan on Monday that additional six suspects were arrested by the command.

Okuwobi, who said those arrested were currently being interrogated by the state police command, assured that the command would try all it could to get to the root of the matter and at the same time, bring the perpetrators to book.

She stressed that the suspects included subordinates of the illegal school operator as well as parents of the victims who were said to have conspired with the suspect, Alhaji Abdul Ganiyu Imoniyi, who lives around Olomi-Eleta area of Ibadan.

“The prime suspect may be charged for murder following an unconfirmed allegation that one or two of the ‘students’ were tortured to death and buried without the knowledge of the law enforcement agents,” Okuwobi stated.

She said nine of the victims had been taken to the Social Welfare Department while adults among them had been released to their relations, adding that no stone would be left unturned to unravel the perpetrators of the act.
