Police arrest suspects in Uduaghan’s team’s attack

Sylvester Idowu, Warri - 18.07.2008

Four armed robbery suspects who allegedly participated in the attack on the advance security team of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on June 26 have been arrested by the police.

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Jacob Oshiomogho, made the disclosure on Wednesday evening in Warri while briefing journalists on the achievements of his officers in Ughelli and Warri commands.

He said the suspects were in custody after being picked from their hideouts while detectives were on the trail of other members of their gang.

Governor Uduaghan’s advanced security team ran into the gang at Pamol Estate, Oghara, and engaged it in a fierce shoot-out. The incident which took place at about 2.30 p.m when the entourage was on their way to Warri Township stadium for Jay Jay Okocha’s testimonial match, claimed the life of a police driver while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Contrary to the widespread belief that the governor was the target of that attack, Mr. Oshiomogho explained that the robbers laid ambush for a bullion van that was expected to pass through the route that day.
